Lukasz Spychala
Who are you, where are you from, and what is it that you do?
Hi! I'm Lukasz Spychala, known by my artistic pseudonym "Koneser." I'm a self-taught photographer residing in Wroclaw, Poland. Photography is not just a passion for me; it's my entire life.
Growing up, my parents were photography enthusiasts. My dad had his own darkroom, and my mom continues to capture stunning digital landscape photos during her mountain adventures. Naturally, the camera found its way into my hands, and I quickly discovered a stronger affinity for analog photography than digital.
I've been immersed in photography since middle school, spanning about 14 years now. My journey began with a digital camera, but in college, I took the plunge and acquired my first analog camera, the Mamiya RB67 Pro-S, which remains my primary tool to this day. Alongside my photographic pursuits, I successfully graduated from Wroclaw University of Technology with a master's degree in computer science. By day, I work as a software developer.
During my third year of studies, I joined the Cultural Agenda of Wroclaw University of Technology. It was then that I consciously decided to delve into analog photography. What captivates me about it is its inherent unpredictability and the meticulous process of crafting each frame. In my opinion, it stands as the most beautiful form of photography ever created.
Why do you do what you do, and what is it that you are most passionate about?
For several years now, I've exclusively immersed myself in analog photography. It represents not just a different method of taking pictures but a distinct philosophy. During a photo shoot, instead of capturing several hundred or even a thousand photos as with a digital camera, I focus on creating 12 well-thought-out and meticulously planned shots. This approach eliminates the later challenge of sifting through numerous images to find the best ones.
What sets analog photography apart is the unique character of the photographic material, producing captivating color effects and boasting a remarkably wide range. The true gem lies in the generous size of the photosensitive material, measuring 6cm x 6cm. Attempting to replicate this with a digital camera featuring such a large sensor would be prohibitively expensive.
Engaging in traditional photography is an entirely different approach and style of work. I derive immense satisfaction from carefully crafting and perfecting each frame. Pressing the shutter button becomes the conclusive step, sealing the frame and its details precisely as intended. As I create these photos, a sense of calm envelops me, as if time with the model has slowed down. In that moment, I take a breath, reflecting on the thoughts in my head and the emotions stirring my heart.
Is there something you have learned about yourself or society because of the work you create?
Art has the remarkable power to delve into sometimes challenging yet necessary topics, serving as a catalyst for discussions and a rallying cry for change. It navigates through significant social, historical, and political themes, either provoking thought, standing as a staunch defense of a particular perspective, or acting as a springboard during difficult times, breathing hope for a brighter tomorrow. In its essence, art provides an escape from mundane everyday life, inviting us into alternate realms and better places.
Beyond its societal impact, art can be a personal diary, allowing creators to share emotions, experiences, and their unique worldview, often offering therapeutic solace. It also manifests itself in the beauty of everyday objects, pleasing our eyes and contributing to an enhanced sense of well-being. The significance of art in society is profound, with each individual finding a piece that resonates, answering their current needs.
As a photographer immersed in the body-positivity trend, I embrace every model without exclusion based on body type. My hope is that this inclusive approach aids many in accepting themselves, recognizing the unique beauty within each individual. I firmly believe that every person is worthy of being captured by the lens, limited only by our collective imagination. This allows for each person to be portrayed in a narrative or setting that complements them.
My goal extends beyond creating aesthetically pleasing images; I aim to weave a story of emotions, dreams, and fears into my photographs. Additionally, I aspire for my work to stimulate conversations and discussions. In my photo series, I often leave an open ending, inviting viewers to draw their own conclusions and craft their own endings.
Who is your favourite model you worked with, and why?
I'm fortunate to share my passion with someone incredibly close to me – my girlfriend, who often graces my photos as a model. Beyond our planned sessions, we find ourselves spontaneously waking up in the middle of the night, heading out without a specific photo plan. On the streets of Wroclaw, you'll most likely spot me with my camera during extreme times – either very early in the morning or late at night.
I want all readers to understand that there's nothing more enriching in life than a passion that not only brings happiness but also introduces new goals and challenges. Connecting with a person who embraces and accepts my passion has been a crucial aspect of my life. This passion has become such a substantial and indispensable part of who I am. Not accepting this passion would mean denying a fundamental aspect of myself, including how I navigate and express feelings that sometimes elude precise words.
I've found someone special who not only accepts my passion but, even when our opinions differ, supports my decisions and underscores the importance of aligning everything with my own sense of harmony. Words and gestures will never be enough to express my gratitude, but I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to her at this moment.
Lastly, I invite everyone to engage in discussions under my photos. You can find her on Instagram as @lisia.dama (https://www.instagram.com/lisia.dama/). I'm hopeful that your responses and reactions will mark the beginning of new frames for me, perhaps capturing the best photo of my life.
Which artist do you admire the most or has been an example or mentor to you and why?
Everything our eyes absorb holds a more or less conscious influence on us. In my view, my photography is deeply shaped by the creators of film, TV series, and various visual arts. While it might seem unrealistic in today's world, my aspiration is to craft something genuinely new, allowing me to look in the mirror and see a true creator, not just a reproducer.
On the flip side, I strive to avoid drawing direct inspiration from the photos of others around me who are actively engaged in photography. I believe that exposure to their work can quickly embed in our subconscious, leading us to unintentionally reproduce their style. However, you'll find photo albums of renowned photographers in my house, as my interest lies more in the rich history of photography. I also closely follow other photographers from my country.
Yet, my primary wellspring of inspiration lies in the realm of painting. The colors, textures, and contrasts found in paintings captivate me. I hold a deep appreciation for the works of Edward Hopper, Andrew Sendor, and Zdzislaw Beksinski.
Moreover, I believe that every photographer I've encountered on my journey has left a greater or lesser imprint on my approach. I seek to extract valuable insights from interactions with people, not solely limited to those within the photography industry. Interestingly, my most profound inspiration comes from models, not necessarily other photographers. In a frame, the person takes center stage—their energy, the way they respond to the location or my conceptualization of who they could become are paramount.
